Hermann Park, the Zoo and what is actually walkable
Houston is not a walking city and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Here is what is genuinely close, and what is a drive.

On the property
The lakeside path loops the water at roughly half a mile. It is flat, paved and shaded in parts, and it is the only stretch nearby you can walk or run without crossing a road. In practice this is where most residents with dogs and most runners actually go.
A short walk
NRG Park and the Astrodome grounds are five minutes on foot. Mostly open ground and parking, but it is space, and it is quiet on non-event days.
A short drive
- Hermann Park — about fifteen minutes. 445 acres, with a golf course, a Japanese garden, a lake with pedal boats and the miniature train. The genuinely good park in this part of Houston.
- Houston Zoo — inside Hermann Park, same trip. Worth a membership if you have children; it is the sort of place you go repeatedly rather than once.
- Miller Outdoor Theatre — also in Hermann Park. Free performances through the season on the hill.
- Museum District — around twenty minutes, and several of the museums are free.
What you will need a car for
Groceries, most restaurants, anything in the Museum District, and Hermann Park itself. This is a neighbourhood you drive from. The trade is that you get more space and a lake outside, at a rent that walkable neighbourhoods in Houston do not offer.
Questions
Is there anywhere to walk to for coffee or dinner?
Not within a comfortable walk. The area immediately around the community is residential and parkland rather than retail. Most residents drive five to fifteen minutes.
