Getting in and out on NRG event days
About twenty days a year, the roads around NRG Park stop behaving normally. Here is what actually happens and how residents work around it.

The pattern
Traffic builds inbound roughly two hours before kickoff or doors, and clears outbound over about an hour afterwards. Kirby Drive and Fannin Street take the worst of it. Almeda Road holds up better.
The entrance that stays clear
Residents come and go via Lakes at 610 Drive, which sits off the stadium traffic pattern. Getting out of the community is rarely the problem — getting across Kirby or Fannin during peak inbound is the slow part.
If you have to be somewhere
- Heading north to the Medical Center: mostly unaffected. Event traffic runs inbound to NRG, not up Fannin.
- Heading west or to the Galleria: take 610 rather than surface streets.
- Heading downtown: TX-288 rather than cutting through.
Rodeo is the long one
Three weeks across late February and March, most evenings. Not one bad afternoon — a sustained period. If your schedule has you driving at 5 PM, budget for it rather than being surprised by it every year.
The upside
You can walk to all of it. Event parking around NRG runs $30–$60 and the queue to leave the lot afterwards is worse than the queue to get in. Residents skip both.
Questions
Do residents get event parking passes?
Resident parking is separate from event parking and is not affected by events. Ask the office about guest parking on event days specifically, since that is where it gets tight.
